Energy-from-waste politician opposition

Richard Marles - Deputy Prime Minister

Labor MPs, including Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, have written to Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny to oppose the Lara incinerator project.

CHRIS BOWEN MP - MINISTER FOR CLIMATE HANGE AND ENERGY

  • "The planned incinerator in Eastern Creek is an insult to local residents and should be rejected. Western Sydney is not a dumping ground for Sydney's problems."
  • “Another stupid proposal to build a bloody big incinerator in our community, this time at Horsley Park/Eastern Creek. No amount of spin [or] “clean energy” changes the fact that this is a massive incinerator which will emit fumes right across Western Sydney”
  • "Local residents already have to cop the foul odours that come from the tip and recycling facilities in Eastern Creek. Now they’re expected to put up with extra fumes and pollution from an incinerator, not to mention the hundreds of extra trucks that will clog up our roads every day delivering waste? How many times do we have to keep having this same fight? Western Sydney is not a dumping ground for Sydney’s problems and we will not be treated like second class citizens."

Lily D’Ambrosio MP - Minister for Climate Action, Energy and Resources

Mill Park MP Lily D’Ambrosio signed a petition to state parliament sponsored by another Labor MP, Bronwyn Halfpenny, opposing a waste heat-to-energy proposal in Wollert, neighbouring her seat of Mill Park.
“Over the past few months, we’ve been working with community to understand the way forward on the proposed waste-to-energy incinerator,” she wrote on Facebook on November 2.
“We’ve listened to the community. It is clear that residents are not supportive of the proposal in Wollert, and we’re with you.”

Janelle Saffin MP

  • “A waste incinerator would be pumping out significant levels of carbon pollution. The chimney stack releases not only carbon dioxide but also a toxic soup of gas, including dioxins, oxides of nitrogen, carbon, sulphur, and chlorine. The remaining ash contains—among other things—lead, chrome, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lithium et cetera.”
  • “One has to ask why an incinerator is okay for a regional area and not for the city."
  • “If it is not okay for the people of the Australian Capital Territory, then it is not okay for the people of regional New South Wales."

Bronwyn halfpenny MP

Labor MP, Bronwyn Halfpenny, sponsored a petition to state parliament, opposing a waste heat-to-energy proposal in Wollert.

PENNY SHARPE MP - Minister for Climate Change, Minister for Energy, Minister for the Environment, and Minister for Heritage

  • “Time for talk is over,” and “This project shouldn’t be going ahead, and the government should stop it now.” - Eastern Creek Energy-from-Waste proposal

Bronwyn Halfpenny MP Lauren Kathage MP ANDREW GILES MP

Thomastown MP Bronwyn Halfpenny and Yan Yean MP Lauren Kathage came out publicly to support the community in opposing Cleanaway’s Waste to Energy Incinerator. Andrew Giles MP is noted as working with the NO Northern Incinerator Wollert community group on creating a new Parliamentary petition against the proposal.

DR TIM READ MP

"No Northern Incinerator Wollert presented a petition with 2,500 signatures against the planned incinerator. Ironically, the Victorian Minister for Energy, who introduced the policy, also signed it. It’s rich to see state and federal Labor MPs publicly opposing these incinerators in their own backyards while quietly backing the very policy that allows them. Perhaps they’re worried about losing votes if their constituents see them pushing these dangerous, toxic projects. But let’s be clear they’re in power. Some are even ministers. They’ve signed the petition, but so far, they haven’t lifted a finger to actually stop it."

Kristy Mcbain mp

"I have said from the start I am against this incinerator being located in Tarago. I'm concerned about the impact it would have on residents, local industries and the environment.'

TANYA DAVIES MP

Started a petition against the Eastern Creek facility.

Cate Faehrmann MLC

Luke Foley MP

Called for residents to sign a petition against the Eastern Creek facility.
